Monthly Livestream #23!
Thanks everyone for a great livestream this afternoon! Here's the recording.
I started off with a few Bill Evans' tunes: a more obscure one called "Knit for Mary F", then the more common "Very Early".
Then had a lot of great questions, starting with one about using a number as a motive. Then had a question about how to learn an memorize new music (spoiler alert: I like to write out my own charts by hand to memorize music! but also really learning to use your ears is the most important, and there's even a place for "muscle memory", although I find that to be the least reliable in the long term." Then had some specific questions about some recordings of mine, "Lifetime" from the album Fellowship, and the arrangement of "I Should Care" I play with Colin Stranahan and Rick Rosato. Then had some questions about my own personal practice routine, and the importance of looking for qualities you like in your own playing, as opposed to always finding flaws and beating ourselves up. (Of course it's good to be hard on yourself at times! But there's another side to the equation as well, that can also involve looking for things you actually don't like in playing that you otherwise admire.)
I've attached a chart here for my tune "Lifetime" if anybody wanted to try it out. When we recorded it there was no chart, I just played the melody for Dezron and Craig, but when I've played the tune since then I've always used a chart.
Thanks again for tuning in! And see you all next month,
Glenn
