Monthly Livestream #33! (take 2!)

Thanks for tuning in to this afternoon's livestream! This time the video was working and it was recorded properly! So here's the recording.

I started off with a tune, "Waltz for Debby" (for you Isak!), then went into some great questions. First was one about applying Barry Harris' famous "6th diminshed scale", which was fun to elaborate on a bit, and talk about some ways of using contrary motion. Then into a detailed discussion about minor 7th chords, and when to use which modes on different minor 7th chords. Then had a question about playing in 5, which led to a demonstration of my favorite subdivision exercise. Then an interesting question about closing our eyes when we play, for which I was happy and ready to take out my blindfold and play a bit. (It's important to be able to play without looking!) Then a question about thinking about scales when we improvise, and whether or not I think about scales when I improvise. (Short answer, no, but I'm not "anti-scale" by any means. Was fun to elaborate on this one.)

Then I revisited a question from last week's livestream about using "chorale-type" playing in feels other than ballads. I think this topic is more clearly demonstrated with the overhead camera, so I wanted to go over it again.

And then finally a question about getting started making YouTube videos - and for that I revealed the "secret" of my educational videos...

Thanks again everyone for a great year - and see you all in 2023!
