Monthly Livestream #36!

Thanks to everyone for tuning in to this afternoon's livestream! Here's the recording.

I started off with a few tunes - first "Nobody Else But Me", then a tune that I wrote on the road last month called "Wayne" (dedicated to Wayne Shorter of course).

Then had a question about arranging for trio - how to arrange, and then how to notate it for the band. So I decided to do an arrangement on the spot of a tune suggested by Marc - "Beatrice". I talked about some strategies I like to use when arranging, and came up with and notated (if a bit messy...) an arrangement in the stream.

Then had a question about playing "runs", and whether or not they are improvised. This was a fun discussion on some "tricks" that you can use to play rippling runs up and down the piano, drawing on some ideas from Art Tatum.

Then finally a question about practicing with a metronome vs. playing with a play along, which led into a discussion of ways to practice playing in different parts of the beat with the metronome. I had fun playing "There Is No Greater Love" a bit with a play along track for this one.
