Monthly Livestream #37!
Thanks for tuning in to today's livestream! Here's the recording.
I started off with a few tunes, first "Black Orpheus". Then had a request for "Ain't Misbehavin'", which I was happy to play!
Then moved into to some great questions. First was about intros - ways to think about them, as well as some of my favorite recorded examples. This ended up being an elaborate answer that took up most of the livestream, where we listened to 5 very different and very great intros from 5 of my favorite recordings, with pianists Oscar Peterson, Erroll Garner, Dave Brubeck, Brad Mehldau, and Fred Hersch.
Then had a question about preparing for a performance/show or recording, and if I practice differently for that. And, yes I do! One thing that I didn't say in the stream that I should have - when learning music specifically for a recording or show, an important goal is to memorize the music. But if I don't have a show or recording coming up, then practicing is kind of like "brainstorming", or "searching" for new repertoire. Both are important processes! If you are always brainstorming, but never putting anything down for a recording or performance, practicing can seem aimless. But if you never just freely wander and discover, you can feel like you're never growing or developing new ideas.
Then a question about some "tricks" to add decorations to our lines - so I showed one of my favorite tricks to create ornaments in our lines. This is something I also discuss in more detail in this video here on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/posts/cool-bill-evans-47969175?utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=postshare_creator&utm_content=join_link
Thanks again everyone, and look forward to seeing you again next month!
