Monthly Livestream #44!
Thanks for tuning in to today's livestream! Here's the recording.
First I showed off a new book that's coming out very soon - the complete transcriptions of "Solo Vol. 2", transcribed by Michael Lucke! The book is just about finished, and will be available in print and digital forms very soon. I read through a bit of "Blue in Green" just as a sample - keep your eyes out!
Then I played a tune: "How Insensitive", by Jobim, and moved right into questions. Today we covered:
- how to write chord symbols for very abstract chords (spolier: don't - just write the notes out)
- tips for getting started in jazz from a classical background. We started with some of the similarites and the primary differences between the two approaches, and the idea that playing jazz is basically being a composer. Then somehow I ended up demonstrating different ways of harmonizing the famous Chopin Nocturne in Db.
- and how to arrange a tune for solo piano. Took a request for this one, "Embraceable You". And starting from the complete basics, we wrote out an arrangement for the tune, and gradually became more complex, eventually arriving at a discussion on "four voice" type harmonizing. (For a more detailed breakdown of this "four-voice" technique, check out this video: "Chorale-Type Playing")
Thanks again for tuning in, and see you all next month!
