Monthly Livestream #47!
Hi everyone,
Thanks for tuning in to yesterday's livestream! Here's the recording.
I started off with my wife Tomoko Omura's arrangement of Debussy's famous piano piece "Arabesque". She turned it into a really cool jazz waltz, and we're playing it in a concert in Boston this Friday. Then I had a request for the Billy Strayhorn tune "Day Dream", which I hadn't played in a while but was happy to try out.
Then into some questions: first was one about "playing over the barline". I used the tune Solar as an example to dive into this. Then has a question about playing "counter melodies in the left hand" - which is a difficult question but I think I have an interesting "hack" for starting to do this relatively easily. Then had a question about composing, and some ways to get started. For this, I always think about Chick's great advice to composers: "Compose!". Seems simple, but actually powerful, and if we want to be composers we need to be disciplined to compose every day, and really nurture this habit.
Thanks again everyone, and see you next month!
