Monthly Livestream #49!
Thanks for tuning in to today's livestream! Here's the recording.
I started off with "In Your Own Sweet Way" by Dave Brubeck, then had a request for the Wayne Shorter tune "United".
Then moved into some great questions:
about "voicing" - the term in classical music that refers to what notes you bring out in a chord, and how you can use that create voicings over ii-V-I's. This was the topic of one of my first (and most popular") YouTube videos, called "What is Voicing", so more more on this topic you can check out that video too: https://youtu.be/FWrSFOiEpT0?feature=shared
About the "keybed" in piano playing - how we use it and how we don't use it in our playing. It's important to remember that sound at the piano comes before the keybed, at the escapement level, not at the keybed - and this discussion tried to break down this important topic.
About improvising over tunes with "triadic" harmonies. For this, I think it's very important to be comfortable generating melodies in just one key, and hearing the power in diatonic melodies. I showed an exercise that I learned from the great Aaron Parks - and I also have a video all about this here on Patreon if you wanted to take a deeper dive in this powerful idea: An exercise in melody (from Aaron Parks)
And finished up with a question about the most effective ways to internalize new concepts in our playing. (Spoiler alert: is basically just takes a long time!)
Thanks again everyone, and see you next month!
