Monthly Livestream #50!

Thanks for tuning in to today's livestream! Can't believe this was #50! 50 months in a row, and some of you have been with me from the very beginning. Thank you again for making these livestreams so engaging - and here's to the next 50!

I started off with a few tunes: "Two for the Road" by Henry Mancini, then "Serenity" by Joe Henderson.

Then moved into a bunch of great questions:

  • About the necessity of practicing everything in all 12 keys - is it really necessary? For this I talked about the ways transposing have been useful for me, and also a tip I got from the great Fred Hersch.

  • Any tips for practicing fast tempos, above 300? Demonstrated some ideas using the tune "Just In Time", and this also led to a discussion of the difference between playing "on the grid" vs. "floating"

  • About "Chorale-Type" playing, and how to get more comfortable moving the "tenor line" (ie LH thumb). Had some ideas about how to practice this using the tune Blue in Green.

  • A question about "flourishes" - and how they could be played with two hands or RH alone. Used some examples from Barry Harris and Dave Brubeck for this.

  • And one more very specific question about a tune of mine called "Forecast", which led to a hand independence exercise that's been helpful for me.

Thanks again everyone, and see you all next month!
