Monthly Livestream #54!
Thanks for tuning in to today's livestream! Here's the recording.
I started off with a few tunes: first a request for the tune "Conception", then a Clare Fischer tune I've been working on called "Pra Baden" (By the way here's the original, and this album "Just Me" is highly recommended!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-1ikLSbvmc)
Then went into some great questions:
about recording of Sullivan Fortner playing duo with Dianne Reeves (it's here, the tune "That's All" starts at around 41 minutes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ce1jRDhYPs0 ) I gave some ideas about how to comp in this kind of "two handed, slow quarter notes" manner.
Then I made a quick book recommendation for "The Taubman Approach to Piano Playing" by Edna Golandsky, which just came out this month. You can get it here: https://www.amazon.com/Taubman-Approach-Piano-Technique-Comprehensive/dp/1637557434 This book really explains some details of piano playing in a very clear, and I believe correct way. Also had a question about how this has benefited my playing recently, and gave an example in a LH "choro" figure.
Then had a question about walking basslines, and some tips for crafting effective lines. Basically, simple is better. I demonstrated a bit on the tune "Bye Bye Blackbird".
Then a question about "side slipping", which led to some ideas about playing "above" the harmony be using chords that "lead to" your target chord.
And finally a question about "thinking in advance" when playing - why it's necessary, and some ideas about how to deepen this in our playing.
And that was it - thank you again for tuning in! Was an inspiring session, a lot of great topics to think about.
Always my best from Brooklyn, and see you next month!
