Monthly Livestream #58!
Thanks for tuning in to today's livestream! Here's the recording.
I started off with a few tunes: first was "Love Walked In", the old standard by George Gershwin. Then something new to me called "Sorry - Grateful" by Stephen Sondheim.
(Apologies about 19 minutes in there was some crackling in the vocal mic! Someone mentioned it around 25 minutes in, so there's a little cut there in the stream when I restarted my audio. I believe it was fixed for the rest of the session!)
Then into some great questions:
About how to play dotted quarter notes in the LH while playing a melody in your right. This is something I've practiced before, and I was using this device on "Love Walked In". Also this led to different ways of orchestrating dotted quarter notes across the piano.
Also re: rhythm, I mentioned this Ari Hoenig exercise that has been very useful for me: The only rhythm exercise you'll ever need
Then a discussion of moving the melody around the piano in different octaves, and in different parts of the hand. I used the Horace Silver tune "Peace" to demonstrate some different ideas here. Also mentioned a great exercise I learned from Geoffrey Keezer about moving the melody around in different parts of the hand.
Then a quick question about some of the changes I used in last month's recording of James.
And finally a question about my favorite "Clare Fischer" exercise. I talked about it in this video with Jeremy Siskind, as well as in these two videos here on Patreon: My favorite exercise! and An application of Clare Fischer's Exercise. Love talking about this exercise and different ways of applying it - please check it out!
Thanks again for tuning in - a lot to think about!
And see you next month. And yes, as I mentioned at the beginning of the livestream, I think there will be a special guest on next month's stream! Will confirm ASAP, so stay tuned. I've wanted to have guests on here for years now, so finally going to start getting that together.
Bye for now!
