Monthly Patreon Livestream #62!
Thank you for tuning in to today's livestream! Here's the recording - the livestream starts at 3:40.
I started off with a few tunes: "Up-Jumped Spring" by Freddie Hubbard (for the season), then into "Que Pasa" by Horace Silver.
Then into some great questions!
First, about hand independence, and how to practice it. I demonstrated a bit on the tune "Que Pasa"
Then a question about some improvisational devices I used on the track "Opus de Funk" from my last record. Talked about a rhythmic device, and also a specific harmonic device I lifted from Erroll Garner's "Fantasy on Frankie and Johnny".
Then a follow-up question from last month's livestream with Cecile - about repertoire, and different ways of keeping it organized.
A question about the best way to practice transposition. (Summary: practice transposing the melody first, and start with major 3rd transpositions.)
And finally ways to think about the left hand in solo piano playing, and an example of one specific device that I have used for my LH.
And that was it - thank you again for tuning in, and see you next month!
Glenn
PS here's a list of all of the records/videos that were mentioned (I think!):
Gerald Clayton - "Ones and Twos"
Herbie Hancock - "Inventions and Dimensions"
Abdullah Ibrahim - "African Piano"
Erroll Garner - "Fantasy on Frankie and Johnny"
