Monthly Livestream #63!
Thanks for tuning in to today's livestream!
Started things off with a request for "Giant Steps" - which I decided to play with an even 8ths feel similar to a great Pat Metheny recording called "Pat Metheny 99/00". Then I played a version of "Lush Life", which was on my mind because I had just played it every night on a tour with Melissa Aldana.
Then into some great questions:
some strategies for memorizing tunes: the importance of repetition for memorizing, the "magic" of long-term memory, and the importance of the ear in memorizing
about playing intros - the importance of playing intros, why we shouldn't "wait for permission" to play intros, some practical advantages to playing intros, and some ideas for how to start playing intros. Even a very short intro is better than no intro at all!
Then a very detailed question about a specific line in a Freddie Hubbard solo on Caravan - (thanks to Jin for providing the transcription, which I've attached here, as well as a YouTube video where you can hear the track. This line starts around the 3:00 mark.) The question was about some strategies for developing and practicing long eighth note lines at fast tempos.
About using "secondary dominants" to arrive at different harmonic destinations. This references a video I made a while back called "Art Tatum's Circle of 5ths", which I went over briefly in the stream, and I'll also attach below.
Thanks again, and see you next month!
Glenn
